Debut, French Fries and other nuggets

This morning I had the privilege of doing my first solo at FBC EP. I pulled out a song, Captivate Us, that I did a couple of times at FBC FM with Evans or Chris on the guitar. Since I don't have my guitar playing friends out here, I got the wonderful piano player at FBC EP, Steve Noelle, to play for me. I have been sweating bullets about this since I was first asked to sing. I even had a nightmare about it one night last week! You see, they do something that's very smart, but out of the soloists' control. They will project the words to a song on their screens facing the stage for the soloists. I had 2 fears - 1) wrong words 2) operator error! I dreamed one night that whoever typed in the slides did them wrong so I sang a couple lines to the song and all of the sudden the words on the slide weren't the words to the song and I totally lost it and ran down the aisle and out the back doors in tears. Thank the Lord, that wasn't the case today. The song went off pretty flawlessly and I pray that the Lord was glorified through it all. It was almost emotional for me at one point while I was waiting for the pastor to finish praying immediately before it was time to sing. I started thinking about all the familiar faces that I could count on in FM to give me a smile of encouragement or eyes worshipping the Lord as I sang. I could see the Vehauns, the Hiltons, the Michaels, the Wilsons, the Whisonants, the Dursts and I could go on and on. I had to quickly tune those thoughts out to keep my composure. I'm grateful the 'first' time is over and pray the Lord will give more opportunity to use the gifts and talents that He's given me to bring Him honor and to minister to the hearts of the people here in EP.

You didn't come here to read about me, I know! You wanna know about those two precious little boys who live with me! Last night Maverick and I went to a little get together with the praise team. He was such a good little boy. Never made a peep except when he realized we were all fixing our hamburgers and he wasn't getting one. Being the nice mommy that I am, I fixed him a bottle, but the wonderful piano player's wife, Yvonne Noelle, held Maverick and gave him the bottle. Then he just sat in his bumbo seat while we played Catch Phrase and it became obvious to my new friends that I'm a game player. I did cause them to write a new invitation song, though - "Frisk Me Oh God." I was trying to get them to say Search Me so my first clue to a gruop of singers was we sing a song for the invitation that says blank blank me Oh God. That didn't help them so I went with the police pat down route and we ended up with a new song. That's not really the way I wanted to begin my reputation with this group...back to the boys...so everyone at the party thinks that Maverick is the most well behaved, content baby alive! I was pretty impressed with how good he was...

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Jake and Bailey were here hanging at the house. Bailey almost decorated the bathroom with wet toilet paper, but Jake walked in just in time! He only does the toilet paper decorating when I'm gone.

I thought Bailey would never say any new words and might have to repeat kindergarten because he wants NOTHING to do with anything that is remotely related to learning the alphabet or numbers, etc. It seems like he's starting to prove us wrong and says a new word almost every day. Today's word was 'french fry.' We asked him as we were pulling into a much cleaner McD's for dinner if he wanted french fries and he said it clear as day. He also attempts to say pretzel, but it just comes out as 'pru.' He did say "Blue's Clues" today. He has always just said "clue," but today he said it all. And he said "sna" instead of "chee" today when I asked him if he needed a snack. I've come to terms with the fact that he's not a speaking prodigy! On the brighter side, he does have great depth perception which he demonstrates every time he pushes that huge metal dump truck around the van! He's also perfecting his use of a straw in a fast food restaurant cup. He gets better every day about not turning his cup up and just dumping it on him and everything around him. That's an important skill when you live with me - the drive thru queen! He still may have to repeat kindergarten - the jury is still out on that one.

You could be on the other end of the spectrum and have kids who never stop talking :) Who would have thought a former ORANGE would be competitive?

Proud of your game-playing prowess!!! And I want to hear about you and I'm glad you're "first" is over, too. And, I'm not ready to go "there" just yet. Love you, girl!

Bailey has been talking nonstop since he was born, we just can't understand him. We're the ones who need to learn a new language. No wonder he spurns our attempts to teach him our silly letters and numbers. Soon he will realize the importance of learning a second language so he can order us around.

Uncle Josh had his own language and Daddy Jake made up one to go with it. We prayed for him to talk and then we prayed for him to be quite after he started talking. We are never satistfied. I think it will be kinda of sad when Bailey starts talking our language. His is so much more fun to listen to. I am glad they have since enough at FBC ELP to use that beautiful voice of yours and that will be just the first of many solo's for you. I also hope that there will be soon many happy faces smiling back at you and I am sure there will be. We love you!!

Don't ever let anyone make you feel like your child is dumb. I have struggled for years with my sweet Sara. I started teaching her letters in earnest when she was three, and she JUST learned all her letters a couple of months ago. I thought it would never happen, but one day it started to stick and I nearly cried. I just heard recently that Dr. Dobson says there is some correlation between reading readiness and losing your first tooth! When I think back, Sara was starting to do so much better with the alphabet right around the time her first tooth was loose! It has to do with some hormone released in your brain...

I love it! Your new song title cracked me up!
About funny words kids say...remember how Josh used to say shoot while playing ball? He used the same word for shirt and shorts too! Ella used to say 'crack' for a cracker. Josh has been using more words since his birthday. It's like he grew up overnight!
